What Is a UV Detector?

A UV detector or UV-Vis detector is an ultraviolet/visible light detector. UV detectors are nondestructive chromatography detectors that measure the amount of ultraviolet or visible light that is absorbed by components of a mixture being eluted off the chromatography column. UV detectors are often used as detectors for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), ultra high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC), nano flow HPLC, preparative HPLC, process chromatography, fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC), and flow reaction chemistry monitoring. Detectors based on ultraviolet absorbance are the most common detectors used for liquid chromatography.

How Are They Used?

HPLC UV/Visible detectors are used with high performance liquid chromatography to detect and identify analytes in the sample. The analyte can be identified by measuring the sample’s absorption of light at different wavelengths. The UV absorbance differs depending on what wavelength is used. Therefore, it is important to choose an appropriate wavelength based on the type of analyte. Attention should be given to the fact that different compounds have their maximum absorption at different wavelengths. A diode array detector is useful to ascertain the best wavelength to monitor your analyte of interest.

Icon Scientific offers the largest selection of the highest quality, miniaturized German-engineered UV/Vis detectors. Our rugged UV/Vis detectors have endless applications. Icons large assortment of HPLC detectors allows you the opportunity to select the best detector for your application.

Types of UV/Vis Detectors & Flow Cells:

There are 7 options for UV/Vis detection:

Most UV/Vis detectors have a keypad or touchscreen for control, as well as analog and digital controls. The detectors also have digital and analog outputs. Most of our detectors have the optional ability to use fiber optics for remote sensing. Several of our detectors are available in field portable versions with optional battery power.

Icon Scientific offers an exceptionally large array of flow cells that cover flow rates from nano liters per minute up to liters per minute. Most flow cells are available with fiber optic connectors to enable remote sensing at distances up to 10 meters. Both stainless steel and PEEK versions are available for most flow cells. Icon Scientific offers the largest selection of light sources available in the industry. These sources include LED, UV LED, deuterium, deuterium and halogen, and pulsed xenon. Selecting the proper light source allows ultimate performance for your application.

Our German-engineered UV/Vis detectors combine the highest performance, smallest size, and unlimited flexibility. For more information on our UV/Vis detectors or any of our other products, contact us today.
